In the summer of 1983 my young husband was diligently filing away at a piece of metal. He was working in the airplane industry at Fairchild in Hagerstown, MD. Gradually the thought formed in his mind, “There has to be more to life than this!” There was no fault with the job. It was a good one. It payed well, and most people in the area were happy to work there. But Steve wanted to do something with meaning. He wanted his life to count. Surely God had a reason for creating him! But what was God’s plan for Steve’s life? Soon my searching husband gave his notice. He would be leaving Fairchild to attend Bible college 500 miles away.
But what about you? Why are you alive? Why did God create you? What is your purpose? Revelation 4:11 says, “Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.” You are alive for God’s pleasure!
Now let me ask you, are you fulfilling your purpose? Are you bringing God pleasure? My son, Steven, preached a sermon entitled, A View of God. One of the points in the sermon was about fulfilling our purpose and bringing God pleasure. Following the sermon I went home and made a sign. It sits on my bookshelf where I will see it often. It reads, “Is this for God’s pleasure?” As I pass the little sign it often jolts me back to a right view of life, as it quietly reminds me of my purpose.
For a better understanding of how you can truly bring pleasure to God, read the Bible. Begin with the New Testament. To hear Steven’s sermon, go to http://thecorbettfamily.org/view.
For a quick start on bringing pleasure to God, apply the following:
1. Understand that we are all sinners. Romans 3:23 states, “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”
2. “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Romans 6:23)
3. John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life.”
John 3:17 “For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.”
John 3:18 “He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.”
John 3:19 “And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.”
John 3:20 “For everyone that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.”
John 3:21 “But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.”
4. “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8
Romans 5:9 ”Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.”
Romans 5:10 “For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.”
And there is much more rich spiritual food in Romans 5! But moving on,
Romans 10:9 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”
Romans 10:10 “For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”
Romans 10:13 “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
