Mrs. Corbett, Why Did You Stop Wearing Pants?

There are several reasons.  One is Deuteronomy 22:5, which reads, “The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman’s garment:  for all that do so are abomination unto the LORD thy God.”  If there is one thing I don’t want to be it is, “abomination unto the LORD thy God”!  God has also said, “I am the LORD, I change not” Malachi 3:6.  What is abomination to Him in Deuteronomy will always be abomination to Him because He changes not. 

What does it mean when it says “pertaineth unto a man”? 

When you go into a public restroom which sign pertains to the men?  Is it the figure in a dress or the figure in pants?  Now you know what “pertaineth unto” means. 

But in Deuteronomy’s day men and women wore robes. 

Yes, but according to God there was a difference and it was very important to Him that that difference be kept intact.

There are pants made for women. 

True.  What happened in our country when women first began to wear pants (which were originally intended for men)?  Were they looked on as godly women? 

Mrs. Corbett, would you have us go back a hundred years? 

God is eternal.  Do you think 100 years makes much difference to Him? 

But you don’t pay much attention to the other verses in Deuteronomy 22.  What about verses 9, 11 and 12? 

Two things:  first, this is the only item in the chapter that God says is abomination unto Him.  Secondly, though verses 9,11, and 12 are not the topic of this discussion, they do contain valuable instruction.  In Psalm 1 we are instructed to delight in the law and meditate on it day and night if we wish to be blessed, fruitful and prosperous. 

Yes, but we are not under the law but under grace.  The law and Psalms and the Ten Commandments for that matter, are all in the Old Testament. 

While I do not attempt to keep the law in order to be saved, I do take note when God says something is an abomination.

Another reason I wear skirts and dresses is I Timothy 2:9.  Here we are instructed to wear modest apparel.  The word for apparel is katastole.  Kata is the word for down.  Stole was a loose outer garment worn by kings and persons of rank.  Wow!  God thinks of we women as important enough to instruct us to wear clothing reserved for people of rank.  In the word kata I see length in my garments and in stole I see protection from evil eyes and minds in looseness.  The word for modest is kosmios.  It means orderly, well-arranged, decent, modest. 

Another reason I choose feminine clothing is because I delight in my femininity!  I love being a woman!  I rejoice in the roles the LORD has so graciously chosen for me!  He created me, knows me better than I know myself, teaches me how to enjoy life to the fullest, and produce the best fruit.

But Mrs. Corbett, some things cannot be done modestly in a dress. 

Perhaps.  I prefer to mount a tall horse in a modest pair of cullottes.  The sewing pattern I use has an overskirt with the cullotte.  You can google for modest cullotte patterns.  When I ski I wear a loose mid-calf jumper over snow pants.  My sillouette is still feminine.  I generally prefer to swim in the same cullotte pattern that I use for horse back riding.  I also swim in this attire when we go to the river or other private place.  For centuries women have successfully worked in dresses.  Only in the last century does it seem to have become a major problem for us.  Perhaps we are also confused about our work roles;  but that is another topic for another post.

 

Trust in the LORD with all thine heart and lean not unto thine own understanding.  In all thy ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct thy paths (Proverbs 3:5-6).
