Many people who want to know truth have rightly asked what the Bible says about music. The short of it is this. The Bible says about music what it says about all of life–approve those things that are excellent.
Philippians 1:10 tells us that the apostle prayed that the Philippians would approve things that are excellent. Our own children are either a confirmation or a discredit to what we have taught. Paul says that the Philippians were a confirmation of the gospel he had taught them. It is my prayer that our children will be a confirmation of the gospel of Jesus Christ and will approve those things that are excellent.
The apostle also said he was confident that God would complete the good work he had begun in the Philippians. I trust He will also complete what He has begun in our children.
To those of us who would grab hold of this concept and “force” it on our children, students, and followers in the area of music, are you prepared to apply it to all other areas of life?
Do you approve those things that are excellent in the area of eating? Do you only eat healthy foods? Do you ever over-eat? Are you, like me, carrying around some extra pounds? Let me remind us that by the same measure we judge others, we will be judged.
So you want your kids to apply “approving those things that are excellent” to their music? You apply it first in every area of your life! Then maybe they will follow.
