Last Wednesday night, we were having a church meal. Wes, Elisabeth, Trey, and Addy were up for Christmas. We were all sitting down eating, and Trey was sitting at the head of our table in a highchair eating away!

After a while, Trey looked around and spotted Daddy at the other end of the cafeteria pushing a big trash can around as he cleared tables. Trey, due to some very painful and shocking past circumstances, does not like to have his family far away from him, so, with a mouthful of partially chewed food, and tears streaming down his face, he began crying loudly, “Papaw, Papaw!” Bro. Skinner was walking by our table, and noticing Trey, he came over, bent down in front of Trey, and said, “What’s the matter, man?” Trey pointed toward Daddy, continued crying, and said again, “Papaw!” “He wants Papaw,” Steven and Elisabeth both said. “Oh, Papaw,” Bro. Skinner said, “You want your Papaw!” Then, standing up, he said, “You wait right here, and I’ll go get him for you.” Then he turned and headed toward Daddy. I leaned over to Steven, and asked, “Is he really going to get Daddy?” Steven nodded his head. He was watching Bro Skinner. “Yep,” he said, “He’ll get him.” Steven, Elisabeth, and I all watched as Bro. Skinner went over to Daddy. We could tell he was talking to Daddy, but with all the other noises in there, we couldn’t hear anything he said. Then he took the trash can from Daddy, and started clearing tables. Daddy turned, and leaving Bro. Skinner, came to the table we were at.

Trey was very happy to be with “Papaw”, and Steven, Elisabeth, and I were all very impressed and grateful to Bro. Skinner for his caring, compassionate, selfless kindness!

We were living in Pennsylvania, where our salary ranged anywhere from $1.00 a week to $400.00 a month. It was nearing Christmas time. There were six children (Timothy wasn’t born yet), and our Christmas was expected to be rather meager. Our parents didn’t plan anything for Christmas- they had nothing to prepare, nothing to decorate with, no gifts, no special Christmas meal.

Then a few weeks before Christmas, a truck pulled up in our driveway. The back of it had a hood, and it was packed with lots and lots of things for Christmas! Another pastor and his wife brought it, and we had never even met them before! Our family watched in amazement as they brought in a tree with nice decorations for us to put on it, plenty of gifts for everyone, a scrumptious Christmas meal, and several boxes of clothes for us that other people had donated! We were so excited! And we had a wonderful Christmas!

Mother doesn’t remember anything that was brought not working perfectly for our family.

Jehovah Jireh- the Lord will provide, or the Lord will foresee and provide!

When Mother was a young girl, maybe 12 or 13, she had done some babysitting and earned $10.00.

When Sunday morning came, she sat in the pew with her $10.00, and as the offering plate was passed around, she got ready to put in $1.00 for tithe. Somehow she felt that she should put all $10.00 in the plate. As the plate got closer she thought, “But I could really use this $9.00… yes, but I think I need to put it in the plate…”. For a moment she hesitated, then put all $10.00 in the plate. When she did, she felt like she had done the right thing, and she was glad she had done it, but she thought, “Well, I’ve done what I felt like God wanted me to do, I sure hope He provides.”

After the service, a lady walked up to Mother’s mom, handed her $100.00, and said, “Take Lisa shopping and get her the things that she needs.”

Mother gave God 10 times as much as was required, and He gave her 10 times more than that!

We were leaving in a few days to go on a kind of long trip. Rachel had been going through a growing spurt and she did not have enough clothes for a trip- she really only had a very few dresses.

Everyone was packing- except Rachel. She was worrying and watching. Finally she went to Mother and asked what she should do. So, (and any of we kids could have predicted this), a few moments later our Mom and Rachel and a few others that had been standing near were gathered together in the living room praying.

That day ended, the next came and went, and several days passed, we were about to leave- then the day before we left, we heard a knock at the door! We opened it, and there was a lady standing, her arms piled high with clothes! She said that her daughter had outgrown her wardrobe, and she wondered if we had any girls who could wear these clothes! We knew these were from God, so we said, “Yes!” She brought in pile after pile and we got to dig through them (after she left, of course). We were so excited and thankful.

God always provides for us, but it usually comes at the last minute!

Anyway, Rachel started packing! She now had plenty of clothes – way too many!
