Do you believe in heroes? Are there any anymore? Yes, there are. Uh, I mean, no there are not. Well, maybe. It depends. It depends on what you are looking for in a hero.
There ARE people who do heroic deeds, save people from imminent danger or death. There are people who give their own lives to save others or to establish new ideals or righteousness. There are human beings who endanger their safety to help someone else. So, yes, there are heroes.
What there is NOT, is any person other than the Son of God, who lived without messing up. Dig deeply enough into ANYONE’s life and you will find dirt. God says it this way, “For ALL have sinned.” “All we like sheep have gone astray.” “There is none righteous.” “If we say that we have no sin we make God a liar.” On and on He reiterates the fact. Yet somehow we continue to expect the unexpectable. We make a hero of someone. Then they become a prime target for the enemy of souls. He goes after every leader, every Christian, every person with influence. His goal? Make them fall.
How many people do you know who give up temporarily or permanently on Christianity because of disappointment in Christians? Do you remember a hymn that says, “the arm of flesh will fail you. Ye dare not trust your own!” ? We have made little gods of each other; expecting unbiblical sinlessness of humanity–yes, even blood-bought humanity. We make our preachers, teachers, parents, and dear friends little gods; and when they fall (“the righteous man falls down seven times and gets back up!” according to the Word of God.) we fall. We wallow in disappointment, disillusion, and discouragement.
Why do we do this? Just because a person obeys the biblical mandate to share the good news of Jesus Christ with others by preaching, teaching or witnessing, does not mean that they will never fall down. It only means that we ALL NEED THE SAVIOR!!! Stop wallowing. Go help them back up! It’s the Savior we are trusting in–not the messengers!
So, yes, give honor to the heroes, but never expect ANYONE to be above falling down. And NEVER speak evil of one who has fallen. Go help them up.
